{"id":1164,"date":"2010-12-27T12:31:22","date_gmt":"2010-12-27T17:31:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/professional-organizer.com\/WordPress\/?p=1164"},"modified":"2010-12-27T15:33:24","modified_gmt":"2010-12-27T20:33:24","slug":"organizing-your-new-gadgets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/professional-organizer.com\/WordPress\/organizing-your-new-gadgets\/","title":{"rendered":"Organizing your new gadgets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In holidays past we were all about assembling toys and reading instruction manuals.\u00a0 Now it is setting up your wireless and using your new smart phone!\u00a0 We each have a different way of getting started on our new technology.\u00a0\u00a0Some of us like to read on the internet, some of us like to play with the technology, others like our friends\u00a0to talk us through the set up.\u00a0\u00a0Let me offer a few hints with baby steps to get organized.<\/p>\n<p>New Kindle or Nook<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For kindle owners, best way to start is by viewing the tutorials on Amazon.\u00a0It has written instructions and a video to view.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>BarnesandNoble.com has an online tutorial for the Nook too at\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/nook\/gettingstarted\/index.asp\">http:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/nook\/gettingstarted\/index.asp<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Some Barnes and Noble retail stores have workshops at the store. You can check it out at <a href=\"http:\/\/store-locator.barnesandnoble.com\/event\/3063863-4\">http:\/\/store-locator.barnesandnoble.com\/event\/3063863-4<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>New mobile device like a smart phone<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Verizon offers a class for their customers with blackberries, droids or other new phones. It is well worth the time to attend! I did! After struggling for 2 weeks with a new phone, it was great to get specific instructions on common tasks and shortcuts.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Google instructions for your specific smart phone. There are an incredible number of online resources to suggest how to get started.<\/li>\n<li>Just do it! It may be painful for the first 2 weeks, but the transition is worth it.\u00a0 Remember when you travel to a new country how quickly you learn the language? When you &#8220;just do it,&#8221; it is the same immersion process.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>New computer, laptop or other hardware<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find a reliable, knowledgeable and trustworthy source to help with installation.\u00a0 If you work with technology regularly, you know the shortcuts.\u00a0 Consistently rely on the same source for set up for all your devices.<\/li>\n<li>Before you transition, think about backing up all your data. I use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carbonite.com\">www.carbonite.com<\/a> and it has been a great resource.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>New ipod, \u00a0ipad, itouch or iphone<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Online resources will be a great help here.\u00a0 Of course Apple offers a great resource here.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/support.apple.com\/kb\/HT4053\">http:\/\/support.apple.com\/kb\/HT4053<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Apple Store offers one on one, workshops and other training.<\/li>\n<li>There is always the\u00a0old fashioned way: by phone at 1-800-MYAPPLE.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Calendar technology<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose a calendar that will work well with your smart phone or find an app that will add your existing technology.
