You may wonder what&#8217;s the best place to start organizing.\u00a0\u00a0 I suggest starting in one of these two ways.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start with what&#8217;s most frustrating.\u00a0 When you are frustrated, you are ready to make change happen.\u00a0 You are ready to let go of items and donate them.\u00a0\u00a0 What&#8217;s most frustrating is most motivating.<\/li>\n<li>Start with a small space. It&#8217;s easy to get overwhelmed by organizing. By starting in small space,\u00a0 you are see the change you are creating. You can finish a project quickly because it takes only an hour or two to complete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Any space you start in is a great space! Start with just 15 minutes at a time and you will be amazed at how much you accomplish.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>I never have enough time to organize.<\/h3>\n<p>Our lives are busy and full. It&#8217;s not always a top priority to organize and other activities take priority.\u00a0 There will seldom be a time we are truly ready to organize or have the time we want to do it all.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make an appointment with yourself (and those helping you) to organize.\u00a0 It can be as compelling as any appointment you make with a doctor, dentist or any professional. Your appointment will prevent other activities from being scheduled at the same time. Write in your calendar the time you will work.<\/li>\n<li>Work in <a title=\"Ellen's Blog 5 small starts\" href=\"http:\/\/professional-organizer.com\/WordPress\/2012\/04\/08\/5-small-starts-to-organizing\/\" target=\"_blank\">baby steps.<\/a>\u00a0 We often think organizing will take longer than we think. It fuels our procrastination.\u00a0 By working in 15 minute increments, with a timer, you can make a lot of progress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Make organizing a higher priority by thinking about your benefits. When you think about how your home or office will feel when you are organized, you will be more likely to get started organizing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>It&#8217;s not my clutter.<\/h3>\n<p>We&#8217;re not always <a title=\"Ellen's Blog Organizing Couples\" href=\"http:\/\/professional-organizer.com\/WordPress\/2015\/01\/19\/organizing-for-couples\/\" target=\"_blank\">partnered with those who view clutter the same way <\/a>we do.\u00a0\u00a0 However, we know that all relationships work best with respect and communication.\u00a0 Share and listen.\u00a0 Your family will want to make their home a serene environment. Set up small ways that organizing can happen on a regular basis.\u00a0 Most importantly, start with your own stuff first.\u00a0 When you model organizing, your family will follow your lead.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What about &#8220;just in case?&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>We live in a world of vulnerability and unpredictability. It&#8217;s in our natural to want to keep more than we need as a result.\u00a0 There are a few antidotes to this thinking.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Minimalist share their <a title=\"Minimalists Just In Case\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theminimalists.com\/in-case\/\" target=\"_blank\">theory of 20\/20.\u00a0 <\/a>Anything you can replace for 20 dollars or go out of your way 20 minutes to get can be eliminated.<\/li>\n<li>Anything you have not used in a certain number of years can be eliminated.\u00a0 You set that number of years.\u00a0 You may have to use it in the next 6 months, but it is worthy of storing as a result?\u00a0 You be the judge of which is more valuable to you.\u00a0 A little inconvenience or more added space.<\/li>\n<li>Share your story of why you are keeping an item. Does it make sense as you tell someone else?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just in case keeps us paralyzed.\u00a0 Check in with new perspectives to see if you are ready to let it go.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>It&#8217;s a gift from someone special.<\/h3>\n<p>Unused wedding gifts, sweaters from sister&#8217;s that are too small, or a collection from a deceased family member can have a strong hold on us.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/decide-whether-to-keep-sentimental-items-with-three-que-1661428566\" target=\"_blank\">Sentimental clutter is hard to let go of<\/a>.\u00a0 Decide if it is something you love first.\u00a0 If not, let it go and let others be blessed by it.\u00a0 If it is, then here are more options.\u00a0 Is it an item that you can take a picture of to remember it, instead of keeping the item? Write a journal or blog post about why it&#8217;s special.\u00a0 Keep a few of the most precious items and sell the remainder.\u00a0 There are many ways to move forward with special gifts that have lost value for us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are lots of decisions to make in organizing.
