Simple Additional Storage Solutions When Your Closets Are Full
As a Certified Professional Organizer, one of the most common things I hear is, “My closets are full. I just need more storage.” Even after editing your closet, sometimes that’s true. It may also be that you need to make better use of the space you already have. When closets are packed, adding a few strategic storage solutions can create easy access to what’s most important and options for storing keepsakes. There may be untapped storage opportunities in front of you to extend your storage options.
Think Vertical Storage
Most homes have unused lots of vertical space. In closets, you can see wall space above and below hanging rods. The back of a door can be an option in a primary closet, pantry or guest room. Walls, doors, and the upper portions of closets can provide valuable storage. Vertical storage also makes what you are storing more visible.
There are inexpensive products that help you add storage options.
- Over-the-door organizers for shoes, cleaning supplies, snacks, or accessories
- Wall-mounted shelves in bedrooms, offices, and laundry rooms
- Hooks for bags, backpacks, hats, and jackets
Use Under-Bed Storage
The space under your bed is often overlooked. Shallow rolling clear containers fit easily under a bed. Vacuum storage bags can flatten items to a much smaller footprint to stack and store under any bed. Seasonal clothing, extra bedding, and extra linens are easily stored under the bed. Always label these to know what you have stored in this area.
Add Furniture That Stores
Multi-purpose furniture is one of the easiest ways to add storage. You may already need extra seating, which can double up if you wisely choose ottomans with hidden compartments, storage benches, coffee tables with drawers, or beds with built-in storage. These pieces work give you extra square footage in your space, too.
Create Zones in Open Spaces
The best storage focuses on zone organizing. You can use a decorative basket beside the sofa to hold blankets. A small shelf in the entry can organize shoes and bags. A rolling cart can store office supplies, crafts, or snacks. Creating designated zones helps everyday items stay organized while reducing pressure on overcrowded closets.
Use the Back of Doors
The backs of doors offer valuable storage space that often goes unused. You can add a pocket organizer, hooks, or small hanging baskets to improve access to primary products in these situations. Backs of doors are used frequently in the laundry room, kitchen, bath, and many small closets to add space and access.
The goal isn’t only to store more. The goal is to create a home where your belongings are easy to access and maintain, and that supports the life you want to live. Sometimes, a few simple storage additions are all it takes to make your home feel more organized and less crowded.
