2024 My Word of the Year: Reimagine

2024 word of the year reimagine

As we enter the new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect, set intentions, and embrace the possibilities that lie ahead. Instead of the traditional New Year’s resolutions, many are turning to the practice of choosing a “Word of the Year” to guide and inspire their journey. I love the simplicity and beauty of this practice. I also want to share the thoughts behind the word that will be my compass for the year: “Reimagine.”

Choosing Your Word of the Year

Selecting a Word of the Year is a powerful practice that involves choosing a single word to reflect your intentions, aspirations, and the energy you want to bring to your life this year. Unlike traditional resolutions, your word offers guidance and clarity for your life and at work.

Here’s a guide to help you choose your word:

  • Take a moment to reflect on the past year. What lessons did you learn? What areas of your life do you want to enhance or transform? Consider both the challenges and triumphs.
  • Are there recurring themes or goals emerging from your reflections? Is there a common thread that reveals a particular focus?
  • Consider your emotions for the coming year. Do you seek joy, courage, balance, or growth? Your chosen word should resonate with the emotions you want to cultivate.
  • Your vision of your year will empower your Word of the Year. What images, colors, or themes come to mind? Visualization can help uncover a word that aligns with your aspirations.

The Power of “Reimagine”

Now,  let me share with you my chosen word for the year: “Reimagine.” This word holds a world of possibilities that encourages curiosity and challenge, fostering creativity and innovation.

  1. Embracing Creativity:
    • “Reimagine” challenges us to approach life’s canvas with a palette of creativity. In my career, relationships, and personal growth, I am looking towards a spirit of innovation that will open up possibilities.
  2. Adapting to Change:
    • In a world that is constantly evolving, “Reimagine” invites me to embrace change with open arms. It encourages a mindset shift which includes viewing challenges as opportunities for growth and transformation.
  3. Cultivating Resilience:
    • Life is a journey filled with twists and turns. “Reimagine” prompts me to bounce back from setbacks and find new paths. I look forward to cultivating additional resilience.
  4. Expanding Perspectives:
    • “Reimagine” encourages me to break free from limiting beliefs and explore different perspectives. This word opens up the lens of curiosity, empathy, and understanding.

Choosing your Word of the Year is a lovely way to set the tone for the upcoming year. Whatever word resonates with your heart, let it be a guiding light toward growth, joy, and fulfillment. Here’s to a year filled with wonder, transformation, and the joy of rediscovery!

Word of the Year in Review: Trajectory

word of the year trajectory 2023

Each year choosing a Word of the Year brings meaning and purpose to what I do and who I am connected with. Being the first year post covid that has been and felt more “consistent and routine,” my word Trajectory gave me lots of opportunities to explore, gather data, and focus forward. I love having a wrap-up to assess where my Word of the Year made an impact.

What this word meant to me

A trajectory is the path an object takes through time and space. That object for me could be my business path or the personal work I undertake. I wanted to be open to finding data on any of these paths was my intention. I am looking for my own patterns in work and in life.

Another reason I chose this word comes from a social media connection. A favorite team, Mollie and Liz, often capture this concept in their graphics. The trajectory paths that often occur are spirals up and down and sometimes resemble a ball of yarn. These graphics show how often a great plan can take many different trajectories. Reflecting on these graphics made this year more fun!

How I used my word this year

My word Trajectory gave me many opportunities for reflection.

  • I am a part of many volunteer associations and efforts. I see a downward trajectory in my time in hours spent. I reflected on this being the time to move forward and find new opportunities to make a difference.
  • My business trajectory continued to move upward, while my business analytics were flat. This gave me an opportunity to invest time and resources wisely in marketing.
  • What is your trajectory of friendship from time to time? Over the years I have heard from many long-time friends. A positive trajectory with long-term stability is what we all want. It takes energy and effort to create this trajectory and it is well worth this.

Capturing lessons learned from my Word of the Year helps everyone review what was best, what is next and what will we look forward to!

2023 My Word of the Year Trajectory

2023 word of the year trajectory

For many years now I have used my word of the year as a guidepost for my work and life. It appeals to me as a way to keep my big picture in view and follow through with the intentions I set for myself. As a whole, we are moving away from new year’s resolutions. Those resolutions were easily made and easily broken. Some resolutions were not specific and some were too difficult to achieve. The Word of the Year keeps us mindful throughout the year of our intentions.

This year I have chosen the word trajectory.

tra·jec·to·ry
A noun, defined as the path or curve followed by a projectile flying or an object moving under the action of given forces. Similar words are course, route, path, track, or line.

You should be far more concerned with your current trajectory than with your current results. James Clear, Atomic Habits

While events change our lives, intention changes the trajectory. ― Richie Norton

However, a good life consists of more than simply the totality of enjoyable experiences. It must also have a meaningful pattern, a trajectory of growth that results in the development of increasing emotional, cognitive, and social complexity. – Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Why this word?

Over the previous years, I have included data-driven decisions in my work and life. A trajectory follows data. That makes use of the data I have to hopefully create a curve that I have planned. As our lives evolve and we continue with uncertain times, my goal is a positive, upward trajectory. As we know, this is not always the case. Have you seen the Liz and Mollie squiggle that represents the true trajectory to tackle a project? That squiggle reminds us the path is not always straight up to the right. However, that squiggle also represents forward movement no matter.

Life and relationships are less predictable. Gratefully embracing the connections with a positive trajectory is my goal. Life is more squiggly than work!

Setting your Word of the Year

Setting your Word of the Year is a positive exercise. Think about this year and what might not have happened. Then, think about a small change you want or something you want to continue. Try on two or three words for your word.  It is a small way to assess where you are and where you want to be.

How my Word of the Year Strategic Made a Difference

Strategic

Each year I recap the experience of my Word of the Year. It helps me evaluate the impact of my word and helps me choose a new word. Reflection and evaluation can be insightful and bring the experience full circle to start again.

What this word meant to me

Details are important. However, details can overshadow and pull us down to the point that we miss the big picture. This year I wanted to start in a new direction and keep a big view of my business, my work with clients, my connections, and my purpose. The word Strategic came to me as a way to get that big picture. Rather than getting stuck in details, I wanted a way to see a new view of how to move forward and how to help others move forward as well.

How I used my word this year

My word Strategic gave me so much more insight than I might have imagined.

  • Being strategic gave me boundaries. When details got too big or heavy, I had a bigger perspective on a situation. Those boundaries helped me see where to move forward in a circumstance, with a connection, and with where I spend my time.
  • When you are strategic, you have big goals. Big goals give direction. I felt empowered to think beyond the day-to-day work and know how to broaden my scope of work. I have the confidence to work within a larger framework.
  • Through coaching, my word Strategic was a guide for helping others find their direction. Being strategic taps into all of our core values. Bringing those values to the top helps me and allows me to help others to reach their goals.

What’s next

As 2022 comes to a close, my word of the year is going to continue to guide my actions and thoughts. Taking my word Strategic forward will serve me well.

2022 Word of the Year: Strategic

word of the year strategic

For many year’s now, I have chosen a word of the year as a guide for my intentions and purpose. A word of the year keeps me grounded and committed to a big thought for the year.

Why a word instead of a goal

I am a big fan of SMART goals and tracking data. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time based. You can accomplish your goals with milestones, accountability with tracking, and time lines to prioritize what to do and when to do it. According to Essentialism’s Greg, Mckeown, if you empower your goals by connecting to your core beliefs, its more likely you will be successful. Tie your “why” to your goals to ensure success.

I chose a different route over the last few years. As my friend Janice Simon says, the word of the year sets an intention rather than a goal. That intention guides you to stay true to your values and focus decision making. Our word of the year influences our mindset at home and at work, keeping us on track. It is a holistic way to shape the year.

How to choose a word of the year

Take time to reflect on what you want more of or less of in your life this year. Some years it is more about my professional rather than personal needs. I typically begin thinking in December of my word and wrap up in early January. Give yourself time to choose your word.

  • Pay attention to what you are paying attention to, says Adam Grant and John Green. What have you been saying to yourself that you need to do more or less of? Where have you been spending time or need to spend time?
  • According to Inc writer Minda Zetlin, ask yourself these questions: What do I need, not want, but need? What’s in my way? What has to go? What needs to be done in me and through me
  • Narrow your list of possibilities that have meaning to you. I usually narrow down to 2 or 3 words, then to my one word.

Once chosen, place your word where you can see it regularly to reflect on it and use it. That might be in your planner, on your bathroom mirror or your computer desktop. Use it in your weekly planning as you review your tasks and week ahead.

For 2022, I chose the word strategic. Strategic is defined as carefully designed or planned to serve a particular purpose or advantage and of great importance within an integrated whole or to a planned effect. This year I want to view my personal and professional life with an advantageous overview.

Revisiting My 2019 Word of the Year: Shift

Word of the year

It’s the end of 2019 and I have remembered my Word of the Year through out the year.  (Have you? ) It’s truly been a part of my work, my thoughts and my energy as I shift into new possibilities.

Shift: a slight change in emphasis

I have looked at this year as a slight turn in direction.  While working with clients with ADHD has been a focus for the duration of my business, it’s more so this year in learning tools to assist. I am leaning into my work clients with ADHD clients in continuing learning and implementing strategies. What’s new are the many podcasts I have been listening to each day.  I have been taking more NAPO classes centered on this topic.  I love to learn and apply one small action to my work with clients.

Shift: change in direction

We shift toward and we shift away in slight changes in direction. Family first and client work has always been the direction of work life integration for me.  As I step into this more fully, I have been mindful of the true joy that our conversations and engagement bring to me.  I have heard the joy in voices of family and clients throughout the year in their big and little wins.  Wins include completing writing a doctoral paper, using a planner as a high schooler, new interests in a variety of sports, getting a garage organized to park a car or move to a new apartment. As I shift away from some of my volunteering experiences, I have created more white space for myself to be present.

Shift: next steps

I am contemplating my 2020 word now.  I love all the words that I have used in these past years. How has my Word of the Year made a difference for me?  Holding my word of the year throughout the year has kept me true and on target with intentional, mindful shifts.  It’s been a comfort when a bumpy shift occurs that this year is about a slight change. We can empower change rather than be fearful of change.  This word reminds me that we can make change a powerful agent for ourselves.

2019 Word of the Year: Shift

word of the year

My Word of the Year has served me well!  Each year I choose a word that will guide me as I look at new opportunties, face challenges and focus my time and energy.   It’s become a tradition for my colleagues to share our Word of the Year.

Here’s what has been on my mind as the year begins.

Shift

1. to (cause something or someone to) move or change from one position or direction to another, especially slightly

2. (of an idea, opinion, etc.) to change

The world is full of a lot of fear and a lot of negativity, and a lot of judgment. I just think people need to start shifting into joy and happiness. As corny as it sounds, we need to make a shift.

~ Ellen DeGeneres

Your best creative assets do not occur unless you do a mental shift. You have to be in a positive frame of mind because inspiration is fleeting. I walk to work for inspiration and to clear my mind.

~Ron Ben-Israel.

It’s been exciting to think of my word this year. It has been something I feel in the air and in the world.  I have learned that embracing a shift or change is what helps us thrive in all ways.  Shift is a word that shows a slight change and a slight new perspective.

I am looking at all the ways a shift will bring focus to my personal and professional life this year.  I am open to the next steps. I intend to shift my practice with more productivity.  This year I shift my leadership to NAPO Immediate Past President in May and focus on supporting our new President. I am shifting where I am volunteering  and what I am committed to and emphasize.

Knowing what not to shift is important too!  I am remaining constant in many ways as my core values as the same each and every year. I continue my practice with ADHD clients, learning more about ADHD and being a part of the ADHD community. It’s always family first for me!  And of course I continue prioritize my health with healthy eating, pilates and a great night’s rest.

What’s your word of the year? I am looking forward to you posting it here!
