25 Tips for Summer Organizing: Simplify & Relax

Summer is the perfect time to create a more relaxed and functional space at home. With longer days and a more flexible schedule,  you can use your time during the season to  simplify your home and make everyday life easier. With a less structured schedule, you can take self-care time too during the summer months. Here are 25 organizing tips to help you start summer on the right note.

Declutter for a Fresh Start

Letting go and editing is always the first step.

  1. Start with a quick Sweep. Walk through your home and gather items you no longer need. Grab stuff you have seen sitting around your home and creating clutter, put it in a bag and drop it off as strong start to decluttering. Throughout the summer do the same every Sunday.
  2. Sort seasonal items. With school ended, pack away winter gear that has been left out and bring out summer essentials for the backyard, patio or summer sports. Group items that are alike and store in labelled bins.
  3. Let go of winter gear that has not been worn. Donate clothes that have not been used in several winter seasons.
  4. Declutter Beach & Pool Gear. Toss broken floats, expired sunscreen, and unused accessories for a fresh start for summer essentials.
  5. Limit Paper Clutter. You may have gotten behind during Maycember and need to quickly recycle and shred paper and mail that is cluttering your counters.

Organize Room-by-Room

Work room-by-room to have a sense of accomplishment.

  1. Start with an entryway reset to set summer essentials like sunglasses, sunscreen, and hats near the door. You can use a back of the door shoe organizer to help hold these items near the point of use.
  2. Organize your kitchen for summer-friendly foods, declutter the fridge, and create a snack station. Fill your snack station includes healthy fruits and veggies to encourage good choices. Evaluate all the water tumblers and keep your favorites only.
  3. Dig deep in your primary and auxiliary closets to let go of unworn items. Get your closet swap completed so that you can store winter clothing and organize summer outfits for easy access.
  4. Freshen up your bathroom for summer. Get rid of expired products and restock travel-sized toiletries for trips.
  5. Work in the early morning in your garage for a cleanup. Organize gardening tools, sports equipment, and outdoor games to find what you need quickly. If your garage has become a dumping group, sort out and let go of what has been discarded there.

Smart Storage Solutions

Storage solutions make it easier to stay organized.

  1. Make it easy to find what you need by using clear labelled bins for summer gear. You can keep beach towels, yard games, and picnic supplies in labeled bins.
  2. Create “grab and go” bags for both summer sports and impromptu summer outings. Keep your cooler and folding chairs handy with a bag stocked with ziploks and antibacterial wipes.
  3. Make it easier to access items with command hooks attached where items are easy to find. Hooks for towels and bags make it easy to keep the floor clear.
  4. Utilize outdoor storage bins for pool and outside items that are frequently used items. There are a variety of waterproof bins with lids to drop in toys.
  5.  Place a bin, basket or shoe rack at your entry to designate shoe, flip-flop and sandal storage.

Prioritize Self-Care

Now is the time to be sure you take care of yourself first.

  1. Because the sun comes up earlier, start each day with natural light and fresh air. Only 15 minutes outside at day break makes your day more enjoyable.
  2. Take the opportunity for walks each day. Even a 10 minute walk can have an impact on mood and well-being.
  3. Stick with your regular bedtime, no matter how late the time for sunset. Having a regular bedtime routine makes it easier to have a great night’s rest.
  4. Try new fruits and veggies that are in season. You will enjoy learning more about new ways to incorporate these into salads and snacks.
  5. Hydration is always important but especially in the summer due to dehydration. Use your travel tumbler filled with a squeeze of lemon to keep you hydrated all summer long.

Maintain an Organized Routine

Establish routines that maintain all the effort you have put in this season.

  1. Stay organized while you travel away from home this summer. Keep a dedicated space for packing essentials.
  2. Try out new ways to create team work with your family. Assign simple summer chores and partnerships for cooking to keep spaces tidy.
  3.  Keep your family meeting going to discuss upcoming events, why organizing matters and how everyone can be a partner in the effort.
  4. Keep clutter under control with quick daily resets and a weekly Sunday reset.
  5. Fight the urge to be perfect in all things organizing. Celebrate all the micro-steps of success!

By taking these small steps, you can create a home that feels lighter, fresher, and ready for summer fun. Happy organizing!

COVID-19 (Summer) Organizing Makes Me Happy

covid-19 summer organizing

Congratulations to those of you who have been decluttering and organizing during COVID-19! Time spent decluttering has helped you feel productive, organized and calm. For those of you who have not, this transition to Summer is a great time to get started and get organized.

Every Summer, regardless of pandemic or not, we have decluttering and organizing to do. This has to do with routines of our organized lives. These routines include editing what has come in throughout the year and transitioning to the Summer season. Our lives, homes and offices require setting aside time for ongoing editing. Each seasonal transition is a good time to do this work. Most importantly, by getting back to our traditional routines, we are recreating some level of “normal” for ourselves and our homes. Here are seven traditional and one new area for us to work on for Summer Organizing.

Wardrobe Seasonal Swap

In Houston we had a longer Spring than usual. Summer heat is here! Many of us have a Summer and Winter closet. It’s time to do our seasonal switch with whites and lighter clothes. It’s a great time to edit what we did not wear, what we do not love and what has gone out of style. If your Summer items have gotten grey, underarms are stained or if you have lost your love for items, you can declutter these. Donation locations are open again so drop off a bag of these items asap.

Pantry Prep

The pandemic may have caused some chaos in your pantry. As we enter the “New Normal” phase, we are assessing what is in our pantry and how to use it up. If you have found way too many cans of green beans, donate to local food banks. Reassess what your Summer meals will be. There are lots of veggie co-ops to bring in fresh produce boxes this Summer. Re-establish your snack zone for Summer consumption. A pantry prep can help you save money and help you lose extra weight put on during our extended time at home.

Kids School Work

It has been an extremely different school year! Even so, this week papers will be coming home from school. Take an hour with your kiddo and go over school papers with them. It’s a time to reflect on the successes of the year. Determine what is precious and let go of the rest. Do the same with school papers that are from your “corona” school. Keep your precious papers organized in a bin in your kiddo’s closet.

Books, Magazines and Recipe Organizing

This Spring we have been reading more, clipping more recipes and holding our magazines to take on a trip to read. Divide up your recipes to those you have prepared, those to prepare and those that need to be tossed. Share your books with friends and place your books to read by a comfy chair. Working steadily on reading and recipes keeps you and your items up to date and uncluttered.

Summer Linen Switch

Fluff up your pillows and take off your heavy comforter because Summer is here. It’s time to switch your dark colors with whites. Assess your linen closet and let go of ripped, thread bare or stained linens. Think about how many sheet sets are needed and donate to pet shelters. (By the way, did you know that pet adoptions are at an all time high?)

Summer Routines

Routines have been rough this Spring. It’s time to initiate Summer routines to create a level of calm and sense of organization. Maybe your have not had a family meeting in a while. It’s important to host a family meeting to determine everyone’s bedtime. During your family meeting, recreate your family responsibility chart for partnering around the house on meals, laundry and cleaning. At your next meeting, discuss tech time and learning time. With the “New Normal” of COVID-19, we have the possibility to gain traction on family communication and routines.

Summer Self Care

Self care in the Summer may mean more time to sit in the sun (with sunscreen) and read magazines. Find dedicated time to regroup and refresh. Take up a new hobby or sport you have been thinking of for a while.

COVID-19 Safety

Masks and hand sanitizer are available everywhere right now. HEB, Walgreens and many other stores have these at the front of the shop. Be sure you have your stock organized and placed for easy access. Organize these items in your car, purse and bags to be readily accessible.

This year Summer Organizing may feel a bit different. Pace yourself with your organizing. We are in a marathon, not a sprint, during the pandemic. Give yourself a reward for each step you take like flowers on your kitchen counter or a bubble bath. As always, I am here to support you and cheer you on! And sometimes just sharing on social media what you have accomplished is the best reward.

Seize the moment! Summer Organizing and Productivity

summer organizing and productivity

You have waited all year for this! It’s Summer and perhaps you have just a bit more time.  Your lighter load makes it possible to do what you have put on the back burner this year.  It’s time to seize the moment for summer organizing and productivity!

Now’s the time to organize!

Kids’s stuff

Kids’ rooms are overflowing with papers, games and more. It’s time to make a major overhaul of what has built up over the school year.  Start with a trash bag and fill it to the brim. Then go through the space thinking about what is not being used, what could be donated and what should be returned to someone else.  Your kids can be a part of this project. However if you want to work solo, put the items in a black garbage bag in a low traffic area and see what is requested before donating.

Reading pile

That pile of books. magazines and catalogs that have been flowing in are ready for review.  You may be waiting to take these out to the pool or on a trip with you. Review your pile, make decisions and let go of what is not going to be read this summer.  It’s also a bonus for when you return to have less paper.

Your Closet

It’s been an unusually cool spring here in Houston and throughout the country. It’s time to switch over your clothes and let go of winter items that were not worn. (This year we had one of our coldest winters.)  Turn your hangers around as you wear clothes to learn what is not being worn.  Let go of shoes that are uncomfortable or too disheveled.

Now is the time to be more productive!

Learn new tech

Have you been waiting to learn Quickbooks, view Google analytics, or use Trello? It’s time to add that to your action list for the summer. You will have more time to practice and learn. You will be ahead of the curve when fall comes and you have to use this tool efficiently.

Construct a new routine

Productivity often looks like a more automated approach. Routines are the way we automate our time, with either a sequence of small tasks or assigning a day of the week for a specific project. What ways can you create an improved or easy routine for tasks you dislike either at home or work?  By fall you will be solidly using this new routine.

Create solid self care

What does self care have to do with productivity? Everything! A great night’s rest leads to improved brain power.  Start an exercise plan this summer because an exercise routine can make you happier, smarter, clear thinking and more energetic. When you think of the benefits of self care, the return on investment is huge!

Seize the moment now to take advantage of the bits of available time, resources and energy.  Get started this week on your organizing and productivity projects!
